Maria Fisher – Still I rise
I want to share with you Helen Jones recent moving interview on my show “Still I Rise.”
From The Host
Listening to this episode again, I got emotional thinking about all Helen has been through and yet is one of the most enthusiastic people I have ever met.
Helen describes being young and being told by people in her village that God cursed her because she was blind. She had to fight to get to play sports at all, she had to fight to get into the paralympics.
Helen came to the U.S. and found herself homeless with a child and has faced a family court system that thinks blind people can’t raise children. Yet, through all of this she stays positive.
Her story made me think of the stories so many members of the team have shared with me: being bullied horribly in school with students sometimes thinking that if you were blind you must be deaf too and couldn’t hear their taunts, eating lunches alone again and again, being told that since you were blind you’d never graduate high school and showing them up by graduating college, and getting let go from jobs because of vision loss. Yet, you never let anyone’s ignorance break you.
Week after week we come together to support each other and build each other up because we are one team. This team shows our community that vision loss is only just one part of who we are. We are engineers, teachers, IT directors, tech specialists and most of all we are athletes here to play ball.
Even when we have our individual differences we still come together on a weekly basis because we are one team with a bigger purpose. I think each of you is extraordinary not because you have vision loss. I think each of you is extraordinary for who you are and you just happen to have vision loss. I am so grateful to be a volunteer on this team in any way that you see me helping (knowing that I’m way to clumsy and uncoordinated to ever be on the field).
Being a volunteer on this team is a privilege that I am honored to have. Thank you for letting me be part of the Rochester Pioneers family!
